Durch der Sonne kleines Glimmen,
Weit und breit die Bergesgipfel
In dem Nebelmeere schwimmen.

Hätt ich Siebenmeilenstiefel,
Lief ich, mit der Hast des Windes,
Über jene Bergesgipfel,
Nach dem Haus des lieben Kindes.

Von dem Bettchen, wo sie schlummert,
Zög ich leise die Gardinen,
Leise küßt ich ihre Stirne,
Leise ihres Munds Rubinen.

Und noch leiser wollt ich flüstern
In die kleinen Lilienohren:
Denk im Traum, daß wir uns lieben,
Und daß wir uns nie verloren.

Déjà il fait plus clair à l'est,
Dans le faible rougeoiement du soleil.
Partout les sommets de la montagne
Nagent sur la mer de nuages.

Si j'avais des bottes de sept lieues,
Je courrais, à la vitesse du vent,
Par-delà ces sommets de la montagne,
Vers la maison de la chère enfant.

Du petit lit où elle sommeille,
Je tirerais doucement le rideau,
Doucement, j'embrasserais son front,
Doucement le rubis de sa bouche.

Et encore plus doucement je murmurerais
Dans ses petites oreilles de lis :
« Pense, dans ton rêve que nous nous aimons,
Et que nous ne nous sommes jamais perdus. »
