Wenn auf dem höchsten Fels ich steh',
In's tiefe Thal hernieder seh'
Und singe,

Fern aus dem tiefen dunkeln Thal
Schwingt sich empor der Wiederhall
Der Klüfte.

Je weiter meine Stimme dringt,
Je heller sie mir wiederklingt
Von unten.

Mein Liebchen wohnt so [fern]1 von mir,
Drum sehn' ich mich so heiß nach ihr
Hinüber!

Viel steile Berge vor mir stehn,
Die Flüsse schäumend sich ergehn
Im Thale.

Der Aar sich in die Wolken schwingt,
Die Gemse [durch]2 die Klüfte springt

Die Wolken ruhen auf der Höh',
Und durch die Nebel glänzt der Schnee

First published in Urania (see above) as the second poem of Ländliche Lieder, with each two consecutive stanzas combined into one with six lines.

Quan estic damunt la roca més alta,
miro cap baix a la profunda vall
i canto.

Des de la llunyana, ombrívola vall
s'enlaira l'eco
dels abismes.

Com més lluny arriba la meva veu,
més clara em retorna
des d'avall.

La meva estimada viu tan lluny de mi
que jo ardentment l'enyoro
d'aquí estant.

Davant meu hi ha escarpades muntanyes,
els rius escumejants s'estenen
per la vall.

L'àguila s'enlaira cap als núvols,
l'isard salta pels penya-segats,
a l'altre costat.

Els núvols reposen en les altures
i, traspassant la boira, brilla la neu
dels cims.

Com més altiva es mostra la meva noia,
més creix en el meu ànim
l'amor.

Sona una campana en la tranquil·la vall,
les xemeneies fumegen arreu,
en el poble.

Ai! Noia, noia, acull-me aviat, 
és tan erm, fa tan fred,
aquí dalt.
