Und wiesen ihn Alle auch spottend zurück, Er ward doch nicht müde, zu fragen. La forêt était si verte, et le ciel si bleu, Si jaune le soleil, si fleurie la prairie Que rien ne pouvait lui être mauvais. Le garçon est allé si loin, si loin, Plein d'espoir, plein d'espoir, Et quand sur le chemin un autre cœur Il rencontra, rencontra, Il demanda :« Ô montre-moi le chemin vers le bonheur ! Et tous en se moquant lui indiquait vers l'arrière, Mais il ne se fatiguait pas de demander. Il n'était pas fatigué de croire, de croire Au bonheur, au bonheur, Cette sainte énergie d'avancer, personne Ne pouvait lui ravir, lui ravir, Et ses pas devinrent lourds et faibles, Il se traîna plus loin, de ville en ville, Personne ne l'entendait ni maugréer ni geindre. Les oiseaux tout le jour Ont chanté, chanté, Dans ses oreilles c'était comme si des cloches Tintaient, tintaient.
