Erforsche mich, erfahr mein Herz, und sieh, Herr, wie ich's meine. Ich denk an deines Leidens Schmerz, an deine Lieb', und weine. Dein Kreuz sei mir gebenedeit ! Welch Wunder der Barmherzigkeit hast du der Welt erwiesen ! Wenn hab' ich dies genug bedacht und dich aus aller meiner Macht genug dafür gepriesen ? Rat, Kraft und Friedefürst und Held ! In Fleisch und Blut gekleidet, Wirst du das Opfer für die Welt, Und deine Seele leidet. Dein Freund, der dich verrät, ist nah. Des Zornes Gottes Stund ist da, Und Schrecken strömen über. Du zagst und fühlst der Höllen Weh: "Ist's möglich, Vater, o so geh Der Kelch vor mir vorüber !" Dein Schweiß wird Blut ; du ringst und zagst Und fällst zur Erden nieder; Du, Sohn des Höchsten, kämpfst, und wagst Die erste Bitte wieder. Du fühlst, von Gott gestärkt im Streit, Die Schrecken einer Ewigkeit Und Strafen sonder Ende. Auf dich nimmst du der Menschen Schuld Und gibst mit göttlicher Geduld Dich in der Sünder Hände. Du trägst der Missetäter Lohn, Und hattest nie gesündigt; Du, der Gerechte, Gottes Sohn ! So war's vorher verkündigt. Der Frechen Schar begehrt dein Blut, Du duldest, göttlich groß, die Wut, Um Seelen zu erretten. Dein Mörder, Jesus, war auch ich; Denn Gott warf aller Sünd auf dich, Damit wir Friede hätten. Erniedrigt bis zur Knechtsgestalt, Und doch der Größt im Herzen, Erträgst du Spott, Schmach und Gewalt, Voll Krankheit und voll Schmerzen. Wir sahn dich, der Verheißung Ziel; Doch da war nichts, das uns gefiel, Und nicht Gestalt noch Schöne. Vor dir, Herr, unsre Zuversicht, Verbarg man selbst das Angesicht; Dich schmähn des Bundes Söhne. Ein Opfer nach dem ewgen Rat, Belegt mit unsern Plagen, Um deines Volkes Missetat Gemartert und zerschlagen, Gehst du den Weg zum Kreuzesstamm, In Unschuld stumm, gleich als ein Lamm, Das man zur Schlachtbank führet. Freiwillig, als der Helden Held, Trägst du, aus Liebe für die Welt, Den Tod, der uns gebühret. "Sie haben meine Hände mir, Die Füße mir durchgraben, Und grosse Farren sind's, die hier Mich, Gott ! umringet haben. Ich heul, und meine Hülf' ist fern. Sie spotten mein : Er klag's dem Herrn, Ob dieser ihn befreite ! Du legst mich in des Todes Staub. Ich bin kein Mensch, ein Wurm; ein Raub Der Wut, ein Spott der Leute. Ich ruf und du antwortest nie, Und mich verlassen alle. In meinem Durste reichen sie Mir Essig dar mit Galle. Wie Wachs zerschmelzt in mir mein Herz. Sie sehn mit Freuden meinen Schmerz, Die Arbeit meiner Seelen. Warum verlässt du deinen Knecht ? Mein Gott ! mein Gott ! ich leid und möcht All mein Gebeine zählen." Du neigst dein Haupt. Welch Warten einer ewgen Pein Für die, die dich verachten; Die, solcher Gnade wert zu sein, Nach keinem Glauben trachten ! Für die, die dein Verdienst gestehn Und dich durch ihre Laster schmähn, Als einen Sündendiener ! Wer dich nicht liebt, kömmt ins Gericht. Wer nicht dein Wort hält, liebt dich nicht; Ihm bist du kein Versühner. Du hast's gesagt. Du wirst die Kraft Zur Heiligung mir schenken. Dein Blut ist's, das mir Trost verschafft, Wenn mich die Sünden kränken. Lass mich im Eifer des Gebets, Lass mich in Lieb und Demut stets Vor dir Erfunden werden. Doorgrond mij, word mijn hart gewaar, en zie, Heer, hoe ik het meen. Ik denk aan de pijn van uw lijden, aan uw liefde, en ween. Uw kruis wil ik vereren. Welk wonder van barmhartigheid hebt gij voor de wereld gedaan. Heb ik dat ooit genoeg overwogen en u, uit heel mijn vermogen, daar genoeg voor geprezen ? Raad, kracht en vredevorst en held ! In vlees en bloed gehuld, wordt gij het offer voor de wereld, en uw ziel lijdt. Uw vriend, die u verraadde, is nabij. Het uur van Gods toorn is daar, en angsten overheersen. Gij spreekt en voelt de helse pijn : "Vader, als het kan, laat deze kelk aan mij voorbij gaan !" Uw zweet wordt bloed; gij worstelt en vreest en valt ter aarde neder; Gij, Zoon van de Hoogste, gij vecht, en waagt en durft de eerste bede herhalen. Gij voelt, door God gesterkt in de strijd, de angst van een eeuwigheid en straffen zonder einde. Gij neemt de schuld van de mensen op u en geeft uzelf, met goddelijk geduld, in de handen van de zondaars. Gij draagt het loon van de misdadiger, en hebt toch niet gezondigd. Wij zagen u, het doel van de belofte, doch daar was niets dat ons beviel, noch gestalte, noch schoonheid. Voor u, Heer, onze toeverlaat, verborg men zelfs het aangezicht; de zonen van het verbond bespotten u. Een offer, naar eeuwige voorzienigheid, bedekt met onze misdaden. Door de misdaad van Uw volk gemarteld en gebroken, gaat gij de weg naar het kruishout, onschuldig, zwijgend als een lam dat men naar de slachtbank voert. Vrijwillig, als de held van de helden, draagt gij, uit liefde voor de wereld, de dood, die wij verdienden. « Zij hebben mijn handen en mijn voeten doorboord en vastgenageld, en grote onnozelaars, oh mijn God, omringen mij hier. Ik huil en hulp voor mij is ver weg. Al spottend zeggen ze : laat zijn God hem dan bevrijden ! Gij legt mij in het stof van de dood. Ik ben geen mens, maar een worm, een prooi van woede, de spot van het volk. Ik roep en gij antwoordt niet, en iedereen verlaat mij. In mijn dorst reikt men mij azijn met gal. Zoals was smelt mijn hart in mij. Zij zien met vreugde mijn lijden, het vernietigen van mijn wezen. Waarom verlaat Gij uw dienaar ? Mijn God ! mijn God ! ik lijd in heel mijn gebeente." Gij buigt uw hoofd. Het is volbracht. Gij sterft ! De aarde schokt. Dit alles heb ik u aangedaan. Heer, mijn ziel siddert. Wat is de mens die gij bevrijdt ? Oh was ik toch helemaal dankbaarheid ? Heer, laat mij genade vinden. Laat uw liefde mij aansporen dat ook ik u altijd bemin en u nooit meer kruisig door mijn zonden. Wel wacht eeuwige pijn voor hen, die u verachten; die niettegenstaande alles niet willen geloven ! Die alhoewel ze zien wat gij voor ons gedaan hebt u door hun laster beschamen, als dienaars van zonde. Wie u niet liefheeft, komt voor het gerecht. Wie zich niet uw woord houdt, bemint u niet; voor hem bent u geen verzoener. Gij hebt het gezegd : gij zult mij kracht tot heiliging schenken. Het is uw bloed dat mij troost verschaft wanneer mijn zonden mij krenken. Laat mij altijd tot u bidden. Laat mij steeds in liefde en deemoed tegenover u staan. Moge uw heil mijn bescherming zijn in nood, mijn staf in geluk, mijn schild in de dood, mijn laatste troost op aarde !
