Holde Nacht! Durch Buchenwipfel
Scheint der volle Mond in's Thal;
Auf des Berges breitem Gipfel
Ruht sein blasser Silberstrahl.

Tiefe Stille in den Wäldern,
Keine Luft in Baum und Strauch;
Aber weithin auf den Feldern
Wandelt leiser Nebelhauch.

Und so laß die Seele schweifen,
Aufgelöst in Traum und Duft,
Bald die Erde zitternd streifen,
Bald verwehn in Himmelsluft!--

Lovely night!  Through the tops of the beeches
The full moon shines into the valley;
Upon the broad peak of the mountain
Rest its pale silvery beam.

Profound stillness in the forests,
No breeze in tree and bush;
But far upon the fields
A quiet breath of mist wanders.

And so let your soul drift,
Dissolved in dream and scent,
Now tremblingly brushing the earth,
Now dissipating in the heavenly air! --
