Vago augelletto che cantando vai, over piangendo, il tuo tempo passato, vedendoti la notte e 'l verno a lato e 'l dí dopo le spalle e i mesi gai, se, come i tuoi gravosi affanni sai, cosí sapessi il mio simile stato, verresti in grembo a questo sconsolato a partir seco i dolorosi guai. I' non so se le parti sarian pari, ché quella cui tu piangi è forse in vita, di ch'a me Morte e 'l ciel son tanto avari; ma la stagione et l'ora men gradita, col membrar de' dolci anni et de li amari, a parlar teco con pietà m'invita.

Bel oiselet qui vas chantant ou pleurant tes jours passés, en voyant la nuit et l'hiver à tes côtés, et le jour ainsi que les mois joyeux derrière tes épaules ! Si, comme tu connais tes maux pesants, tu connaissais mon état semblable au tien, tu viendrais dans le sein de cet inconsolé pour partager avec lui les douloureuses plaintes. Je ne sais si les parts seraient égales ; car celle que tu pleures est peut-être en vie, tandis que la Mort et le Ciel sont tant avares pour moi. Mais la saison et l'heure moins propice, ainsi que le souvenir des douces années et des années amères, m'invitent à te parler avec pitié.
