O Mädchen, durch all dein Lachen und Singen
Vernehm' ich ein leises Seufzen oft;
Hoch klopft dir das Herz, als wollt' es zerspringen,
Von dem, was es fürchtet und träumt und hofft.

Wie Wolken über die blühenden Matten,
Wie über wogende Saaten der Wind,
So ziehen rastlos Gedankenschatten
Ueber dein lächelndes Antlitz, Kind!

Die Lippen im wachenden Traume bewegst du,
Es ist, als pflögst du mit Geistern Gespräch;
Dann plötzlich die Augen zu Boden schlägst du,
Und hocherrötend eilst du hinweg.

Wohl hab' ich die Zeichen erkannt; verhehle,
Thörichtes Mädchen, es länger nicht!
Dir flackert im Hauche der Liebe die Seele,
Wie im Odem der Nacht ein Licht.

Je perçois souvent un léger soupir ;
Ton cœur bat vite, comme s'il allait éclater
De ce qu'il craint et rêve et espère.

Comme les nuages au-dessus des pâturages fleuris,
Comme le vent au-dessus des moissons ondulantes,
Des ombres de pensées passent sans arrêt
Sur ton souriant visage, mon enfant !

Tu bouges les lèvres durant tes rêves éveillés,
Comme si tu entretenais une conversation avec des esprits ;
Puis soudain tu baisses les yeux vers le sol ,
Et toute rougissante tu t'empresses de partir.

J'ai bien reconnu ces signes ; jeune fille
Dissimulatrice et folle, cela ne tient plus !
Ton âme scintille sous le souffle de l'amour
Comme une lumière dans la brise de la nuit.
