Olisipa minulla tuhat kättä työtä varten, jaksaisinpa panna rattaat jyrisemään, pystyisinpä tuulemaan lehtojen halki, osaisinpa panna kivet pyörimään, että se myllärin kaunis tyttö huomaisi, miten uskollinen olen ! Voi, miten voimani ovat heikot, mitän nostankin, mitä kannankin, mitä leikkaankin, mitä lyönkin, kuka tahansa renkipoika pystyy samaan. Ja siinä minä istun suuressa joukossa, rauhallisena, viileänä iltahetkenä, ja itse mestari sanoo kaikille yhteisesti: "Olette tehneet hyvää työtä!" ja se suloinen tyttökulta toivottaa kaikille hyvää yötä.
