Душа моя в плену, в плену у тяжких дум,
у дней без радости, у ночи без рассвета!
Ни мирный сон полей, ни улиц пестрый шум
не будят больше в ней созвучного ответа.

Куда, куда бежать? Пустынен кругозор,
зной опалил его дыханьем мрачной скуки...
И солнце, как сквозь дым, бросает мертвый взор,
и призрачны, как сон, и радости, и муки!

Душа моя в плену! И грезится вдали ей край пленительный,
волшебный край свободы,
где шумный жизни пир, цветущий пир земли,
кипит, как вешние сверкающие воды...

Дума моя в плену, в плену у тяжких дум...
