Lukas
 In grauem Schleier rückt heran
 das sanfte Morgenlicht.
 Mit lahmen Schritten weicht vor ihm
 die träge Nacht zurück.
 Zu düst'ren Höhlen
 flieht der Leichenvögel blinde Schar;
 ihr dumpfer Klageton beklemmt
 das bange Herz nicht mehr.

Simon
 Des Tages Herold meldet sich;
 mit scharfem Laute rufet er
 zu neuer Tätigkeit
 den ausgeruhten Landmann auf.

L'introduction dépeint l'aube. Récitatif
Language: French (Français)  after the German (Deutsch)
Lucas
 Dans un voile gis avance
 La douce lumière du matin.
 Devant elle avec des pas traînants
 La nuit nonchalante se retire.
 La troupe aveugle des oiseaux de mort
 S'envole vers des grottes sombres ;
 Leurs cris mornes et plaintifs
 N'oppressent plus le cœur craintif.

Simon
 Le héraut du jour se présente ;
 Avec des cris perçants il appelle
 À une nouvelle activité
 Le paysan après son repos.
