Hvorfor hyler de sorte hunde
på landeveiene?
Hvorfor lusker ulvene ilsomt
indover heiene?
Hvorfor sænker sig kvælden så kvælende
sort og stor?
Hvorfor blir det så underlig stille
over al jord?

Klokkerne klemter mod aftenstid,
kimer dagen til døde.
Det lyder så sælsomt i kvældens fred
udover egnens øde.

Langsomt åbner sig kirkens port,
der er så dystert derinde.
Da blegner løvet på alle trær,
og elven så taus mon rinde.

Der drar sig et langeligt, klagende hyl
ind gjennem skogens sale.
Da bæver hele den lyttende jord:
inat rider døden i dale.

Pourquoi les chiens noirs hurlent‑ils ?

Pourquoi les chiens noirs hurlent-ils
sur les chemins de terre ?
Pourquoi les loups rôdent-ils
en courant là-bas sur la lande ?
Pourquoi le soir tombe-t-il si suffocant,
noir et immense ?
Pourquoi est-ce si bizarrement silencieux
sur toute la terre ?

Vers le soir les cloches résonnent,
elles sonnent aujourd'hui le glas.
C'est un son si étrange dans la paix du soir
et dans la solitude des alentours.

Les portes de l'église s'ouvrent lentement,
À l'intérieur il y fait très sombre.
Alors les feuilles de tous les arbres tremblent
et la rivière s'applique à couler en silence.

Un long, douloureux hurlement s'élève
à travers les galeries de la forêt.
La terre entière aux aguets tressaille :
cette nuit la mort passe dans la vallée.
