Lukas
In grauem Schleier rückt heran
das sanfte Morgenlicht.
Mit lahmen Schritten weicht vor ihm
die träge Nacht zurück.
Zu düst'ren Höhlen
flieht der Leichenvögel blinde Schar;
ihr dumpfer Klageton beklemmt
das bange Herz nicht mehr.
Simon
Des Tages Herold meldet sich;
mit scharfem Laute rufet er
zu neuer Tätigkeit
den ausgeruhten Landmann auf.

Luca
Fra grigi velami avanza
la delicata luce del mattino;
e claudicando si ritira
davanti a lei la Notte pigra.
Nelle grotte scure si rifugia
la cieca schiera degli uccelli notturni;
il loro canto lamentoso
più non opprime il cuore angosciato.
Simone
Si annuncia l'araldo del giorno
e con potenti suoni invita il contadino
a tornare al lavoro
dopo il riposo notturno.
