Non si levav'ancor l'alba novella
né spiegavan le piume
gl'augelli al novo lume,
ma fiammeggiava l'amorosa stella,
quand'i duo vaghi e leggiadrett'amanti,
ch'una felice notte aggiuns'insieme,
com'acanto si volg'in vari giri,
divise il novo raggio e i dolci pianti
nell'accoglienz'estreme
mescolavan con baci e con sospiri
mille ardenti pensier, mille desiri.
Mille voglie non paghe
in quelle luci vaghe,
scopria quest'alma innamorata e quella.

E dicea l'una sospirand'allora:
anima, a dio, con languide parole.
E l'altra: vita, a dio, le rispondea,
a dio, rimanti. E non partiansi ancora
inanzi al novo sole,
e inanzi a l'alba che nel ciel sorgea,
e questa e quella impallidir vedea
le bellissime rose
ne le labr'amorose,
e gl'occhi scintillar come facella
e come d'alma che si part'e svella,
fu la partenza loro:
a dio che part'e moro,
dolce languir, dolce partita e fella.

Et ne sont pas étendues les plumes
Des oiseaux à la nouvelle lumière,
Mais l'étoile de l'amour brillait encore
Quand les deux amants beaux et gracieux,
Qu'une nuit heureuse a réunis
Comme Acanthe se tournant en des tours variés
Divisaient le nouveau rayon ; et les douces larmes,
Dans leurs derniers embrassements,
Mêlaient avec des baisers et des soupirs
Mille pensées ardentes, mille désirs,
Mille vœux non satisfaits,
Dans ces beaux yeux,
Se découvrent ces deux âmes amoureuses.

Et alors l'une en soupirant dit :
« Mon âme, adieu » d'une voix languide.
Et l'autre répondit : « Ma vie, adieu »,
« Adieu, reste. » Et ils ne s'étaient pas quittés
Quand le soleil se leva.
Et comme l'aube s'étendit dans le ciel,
L'un et l'autre virent
Les très belles roses pâlir
Sur les lèvres
Et les yeux briller comme une torche.
Et comme une âme qui s'en va et s'arrache
Fut leur séparation :
« Adieu, je pars et je meurs. »
