Doch vor dem Apostel Thomas, der kam, da es zu spät war, trat der schnelle längst darauf gefaßte Engel her und befahl an der Begräbnisstelle: Dräng den Stein beiseite. Willst du wissen, wo die ist, die dir das Herz bewegt: Sieh: sie ward wie ein Lavendelkissen eine Weile da hineingelegt, daß die Erde künftig nach ihr rieche in den Falten wie ein feines Tuch. Alles Tote (fühlst du), alles Sieche ist betäubt von ihrem Wohl-Geruch. Schau den Leinwand: wo ist eine Bleiche, wo er blendend wird und geht nicht ein? Dieses Licht aus dieser reinen Leiche war ihm klärender als Sonnenschein. Staunst du nicht, wie sanft sie ihm entging? Fast als wär sie's noch, nichts ist verschoben. Doch die Himmel sind erschüttert oben: Mann, knie hin und sieh mir nach und sing.

Alors, avant l'apôtre Thomas, qui arriva quand c'était trop tard, l'ange, naguère impétueux, mais cette fois sans hâte, fit son entrée ; c'est lui qui, au Sépulcre, avait ordonné : roulez la pierre. Veux-tu savoir où elle est, celle qui bouleverse ton coeur : regarde : elle a reposé là un instant comme un coussin de lavande, pour que la terre en soit à jamais imprégnée dans tous ses replis comme une étoffe de choix. Toute mort (sens-tu cela), toute infirmité est anesthésiée par cette odeur suave. Regarde ce tissu : où aurait-on pu le blanchir pour le rendre si aveuglant sans qu'il rétrécisse ? La lumière émanant de ce corps l'a rendu plus éclatant que l'éclat du soleil. Tu ne demandes pas comme elle l'a quitté en douceur ? C'est presque comme s'il était encore là. Rien n'est dérangé. Mais les cieux, eux, sont ébranlés : à genoux, homme, fais comme moi, chante !
