Les banderes onegen en la tempesta de mitjanit, les teules colpegen al campanar d l'església: un cop de vent xiula, el fanal s'apaga. Però cal anar vers l'estimada! Aquesta capella de morts amb l'ossera; la lluna guaita lluminosa per la finestra; aixecant cada pas entra també cap dins -- Però cal anar vers l'estimada! El cementiri jueu allà, muntanya avall, una flama blanca damunt cada tomba; un duc escridassa un altre: brètol. Però cal anar vers l'estimada! Més enllà del rierol, damunt el gel hivernal, un esclat, una fressa, com si allà passés qui sap què; ara de nou, tot tranquil. Deixa estar, què vol.... Però cal anar vers l'estimada! Tocant a la masia; de la caseta del gos, negres com el carbó, en surten dos en lloc d'un, em fan un badall amb dents roig roent. Però cal anar vers l'estimada! Allà, davant la finestra, ella reposa al darrera, dempeus, dos espectres fan la guàrdia; a dins dorm la núvia, gemega fort en somnis.... Però cal anar vers l'estimada!
