La tempête épie ma maison paternelle, mon cœur bat au-dehors, dans la nuit, fort ; J'étais déjà réveillé ainsi par le bruit de la forêt quand j'étais enfant. Mon fils,écoute, écoute : dans le lointain repos de ton berceau le vent en rêve geint mes paroles vers toi. Un jour aussi, j'ai ri en dormant, mon fils, et ne fus pas réveillé par la tempête, jusqu'à ce qu'une triste nuit, arrive comme aujourd'hui. Aujourd'hui le foehn roule assourdi sur la forêt, comme autrefois quand j'entendais dans son bruit, effrayé, comme la voix de mon père. Écoute comme l'ourlet bourgeonnant de la cime rechigne et se courbe, d'un arbre à l'autre ; mon fils, dans ton berceau où tu rêves, la tempête rit sa colère -- écoute, écoute ! Elle ne s'est jamais inclinée de peur, Écoute comme elle halète dans les houppiers : Sois toi-même, sois toi-même ! Et si un jour ton vieux père parle du devoir filial, mon fils, ne lui obéis pas, ne lui obéis pas : écoute comme le foehn dans la forêt brasse le printemps.
