In dem Walde süße Töne
Singen kleine Vögelein;
An der Haide blühen schöne
Blumen in des Maien Schein.
Also blüht mein hoher Muth,
Wenn er denkt an ihre Güte,
Die mir reich macht mein Gemüthe
Wie der Traum den Armen thut.
Hoffnung hat auf hohe Dinge
Die Erwartung mir gestellt,
Daß mir noch an ihr gelinge,
Süßes Loos mir einst noch fällt.
Der Erwartung freu' ich mich:
Gebe Gott, daß ich's beende,
Daß sie mir den Wahn nicht wende,
Der mich freut so inniglich.
F. Mendelssohn sets lines 1-8

In the forest little birds
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
In the forest little birds
Are singing sweet sounds;
Along the heath are blooming
Beautiful flowers in the May sunshine.
Thus blooms my valiant courage,
When it thinks of her goodness,
Which enriches my spirit
As dreams do for poor men.
Hope has set my expectation
Upon high things,
May I be successful with her,
So that a sweet lot may yet fall to me.
I rejoice in this expectation:
May God grant that I complete it,
That she does not change the illusion
That makes me so fervently happy.
