Svanen

Från molnens purpurstänkta rand 
Sjönk svanen, lugn och säll, 
Och satte sig vid elfvens strand 
Och sjöng en juniqväll. 

Om nordens skönhet var hans sång, 
Hur glad dess himmel är, 
Hur dagen glömmer, natten lång, 
Att gå till hvila der. 

Hur skuggan der är djup och rik 
Inunder björk och al, 
Hur guldbestrålad hvarje vik, 
Och hvarje bölja sval. 

Hur ljuft, oändligt ljuft, det är 
Att äga der en vän, 
Hur troheten är hemfödd der, 
Och längtar dit igen. 

Så ljöd från våg till våg hans röst, 
Hans enkla lofsång då, 
Och snart han smög mot makans bröst 
Och tycktes qväda så: 

Hvad mer, om än din lefnads dröm 
Ej sekler tälja får? 
Du älskat har på nordens ström, 
Och sjungit i dess vår.

Le cygne

Du bord du nuage éclaboussé de pourpre
Le cygne était descendu, calme et serein,
Et s'était posé sur la berge de la rivière,
Et chantait dans le soir de juin.

Son chant disait la beauté du nord,
Combien son ciel est riant,
Combien brille le jour  et dure la nuit,
Chantait le repos là-bas.

Combien l'ombre y est profonde et riche
Sous le bouleau et l'aulne,
Combien chaque golfe est baigné d'or,
Et chaque vague est fraîche.

Combien il est doux, infiniment doux
D'y avoir un ami,
Combien la fidélité y est chez elle,
Et incite à y retourner.

Ainsi sa voix s'élevait de vague en vague,
Son simple chant de louanges,
Puis il se frotta contre la poitrine de sa compagne
Et il me sembla chanter ainsi :

Quoi de plus que le rêve de ta vie
Les siècles ne pourraient-ils raconter ?
Tu as aimé sur les flots du nord,
Et chanté sur ceux du printemps.
