Da droben auf dem Hügel,
Da steht ein kleines Haus;
Man sieht von seiner Schwelle
Ins schöne Land hinaus.
Dort sitzt ein freier Bauer
Am Abend auf der Bank,
Er dengelt seine Sense
Und singt dem Himmel Dank.
Da drunten in dem Grunde,
Da dämmert längst der Teich.
Es liegt in ihm versunken
Eine Krone stolz und reich;
Sie läßt zunacht wohl spielen
Karfunkel und Saphir;
Sie liegt seit grauen Jahren,
Und niemand sucht nach ihr.

Là-haut sur la colline
S'élève une petite maison ;
Depuis le seuil on voit
Au-dehors un beau pays.
Là-bas un paysan libre est assis
Le soir sur un banc,
Il y martèle sa faux
Et de son chant remerciant le ciel.
En bas, dans un fond,
Est depuis longtemps un sombre étang.
Il s'y trouve engloutie
Une riche et fière couronne ;
La nuit elle fait jouer
Escarboucles et saphirs ;
Elle y est depuis la nuit des temps
Et personne ne la recherche.
