L' occhio immoto ed immoto il pensiero,
Io contemplo la striscia lucente
Che mi vien dal sereno occidente
La quïete solcando del mar.

E desio di quell' aureo sentiero

Der Abend

Lieb mir die Stunde des sterbenden Tages ,
zu der die Sonne schon müde sich neiget,
und ich im Wogen des ruhigen Meeres
den letzten Strahl versinken seh’.

Dann kehrt mir ins Herz eine Zeit zurück,
die viel glücklicher war als das Heute;
in dieser Stunde der Süße und Trauer
sehne ich mich seufzend nach dir, teures Lieb.

Still das Auge und auch still meine Sinne,
in Betrachtung des leuchtenden Bandes,
das auf mich zuwogt aus West, aus dem heiteren Westen,
das stille Gewoge, das Wogen der See.

Ich ersehne von jenem goldnen Pfade,
dass er weise den Weg ohne Ende,
so, als müsst’ er mein mattes Leben
hingeleiten zum Hafen der Ruh.
