Dich nicht sehen sollt' ich
Language: German (Deutsch)  after the Turkish (Türkçe)
Our translations:  ENG
Dich nicht sehen sollt' ich,
Und dich schauen wollt' ich!
Schleier hielt verborgen
Deiner Wangen Morgen; --
Deiner Lippen Nelken,
Dürfen sie verwelken
   Ungeküsst?

Finster ist der Garten,
Doch mir hat im zarten
Kelche blauer Winden,
Die dein Fenster binden
Sich ein Licht entzündet,
Das die Nelke kündet,
   Nie geküsst.

Auf den Finger flog dir's,
Aus dem Dunkel zog mir's
Meine rothen Nelken! --
Ehe sie verwelken,
Lass, bei Lichtchens Glühen,
Ihre Knospen blühen,
   Wach geküsst!

I was not to see you
Language: English  after the German (Deutsch)
I was not to see you,
And I wanted to look upon you!
The veil concealed
The dawn of your cheeks; --
The carnations of your lips,
Are they to be permitted to wilt
   Unkissed?

The garden lies in darkness,
But in the delicate chalices
Of the blue morning-glories
That surround your window,
A light has been ignited
That heralds the carnation
   Never kissed.

It [the firefly] flew upon your finger,
From out of the darkness it drew forth
For me my red carnations! --
Before they wilt,
Let, by the glowing of the little light,
Their buds bloom and be
   Kissed awake!
