S. Rachmaninov sets stanzas 1-2, 4-5

Language: English  after the Russian (Русский)
Once again, sleep does not come to my weary eyes.
I am alone... but in the still silence
Someone sings a mournful song softly to me,
[Someone] leans gently toward me.
My soul goes still. My enchanted ear
Catches the sound of familiar words.
Is that not you, my beloved, my mysterious friend,
The dream of childhood, of days long past?
Are you not the one I've always sought in vain
And to whom I entreat with prayers,
O friend of my soul, is it not you? If it is,
Come to me, hurry!
My soul is weary from all the day's disturbances,
All the fervor of my heart has been extinguished...
And mocking fate has long since
closed all the roads to bliss.
A candle is burning low... oblivious night draws onward.
I am alone... and in the still silence
Someone sings a mournful song softly to me,
[Someone] leans gently toward me.
