Einst am schönen Frühlingsmorgen
Tritt der Räuber vor den Wald. 
Sieh, den hohlen Pfad herneder
Kommt ein schlankes Mädchen bald, 

"Trügst du, statt der Maienglocken,"
Spricht des Waldes kühner Sohn,
"In dem Korb den Schmuck des Königs,
Frei doch zögerst du davon!" 

Lange folgen seine Blicke
Der geliebten Wallerin; 
Durch die Wiesengründe wandelt sie
Zu stillen Dörfern hin, 

Bis der Gärten reiche Blüte
Hüllt die liebliche Gestalt. 
Doch der Räuber kehret wieder
In den finstern Tannenwald.

Jadis, par un beau matin de printemps
Le brigand marchait à l'orée de la forêt.
Il voit d'un chemin creux en contrebas
Venir bientôt une svelte jeune fille.

« Si tu portais au lieu de muguet --
Dit l'audacieux fils de la forêt --
Les bijoux du roi dans ta corbeille,
Tu hésiterais à aller librement ! »

Pendant longtemps son regard suit
La promeneuse aimée ;
Elle traverse la prairie
Vers le paisible village,

Jusqu'à ce que l'abondante floraison des jardins
Enveloppe la charmante personne.
Alors le brigand s'en retourne
Dans la sombre forêt de sapins.
