Wann alle Stimmen schweigen, 
  Die laut den Tag gemacht, 
Und still im Sternenreigen
  Am Himmel geht die Nacht -- 

Dann schwebt aus duft'ger Ferne,
  Aus dunkler Wolken Thor,
Der lieblichste der Sterne,
  Dein Bild schwebt mir empor:

Befreit von Erdenstaube,
  Von Himmelshauch umweht,
So heilig wie der Glaube,
  So rein wie das Gebet.

In deinen Zügen malet
  Sich sel'ge Traurigkeit: 
Dein Auge widerstrahlet 
  Gott und Unendlichkeit.

Da legen alle Fluthen
  Von Welt und Leben sich,
Es löschen selbst die Gluthen,
  Die mich verzehrt um dich.

Ich falte meine Hände
  Fromm wie ich nie geglaubt:
O Segen sonder Ende 
  Auf dein geliebtes Haupt!

La cançó nocturna del monjo

Quan totes les veus callen
que han fet cridaner el dia,
i en silenci, al cercle de les estrelles,
al cel es fa de nit –

llavors, de la tènue llunyania,
de l’obscur portal dels  núvols,
surt la més bella de les estrelles,
la teva imatge sura al meu envers:

alliberada de la pols terrenal,
envoltada d’un hàlit celestial,
tan sagrada com la fe,
tan pura com la pregària.

Als teus trets es dibuixa
una benaurada tristor:
els teus ulls reflecteixen
Déu i l’eternitat.

Allà conflueixen totes les marees
del món i de la vida,
àdhuc s’apaguen les brases
que per tu em consumeixen.

Ajunto les meves mans,
pietosament, com mai ho hagués cregut:
oh benedicció sense fi
al teu estimat cap!
