 Der hehre Engel, der die Pforte
 Des Lichts bewacht, vernimmt die Worte,
 Und wie er lauscht und näher schleicht
 Dem sanften Lied, entsinkt ihm eine Träne;
 Er sprach:

Der Engel
 Dir, Kind des Stamms, schön, doch voll Sünden
 Kann eine frohe Hoffnung ich noch künden.
 Im Schicksalsbuche stehn die Worte:
 »Es sei der Schuld die Peri bar,
 Die bringt zu dieser ew'gen Pforte
 Des Himmels liebste Gabe dar!«
 Geh, suche sie und werde rein:
 Gern laß ich die Entsühnten ein!

L’àngel sublim que la porta
de la llum custodiava, sentí aquelles paraules,
i quan s’acostà més a prop i escoltà
el dolç cant, se li escapà una llàgrima
i digué:

L’àngel:
A tu, filla de l’estirp, bella, però plena de pecats
et puc anunciar encara una alegre esperança.
Al llibre del destí estan escrites aquestes paraules:
“La Peri serà eximida de tota culpa
si ofereix a aquesta porta
el do més preuat per el cel!”
Ves, cerca’l i purifica’t:
de grat deixaré entrar a qui ha expiat!
