På marken vistas fogeln blott,
Och löfven skymma än,
Jag har ej gjort ett enda skott,
Och det blir qväll igen.

Om vintern komme hit engång
Med drifvor i sitt fjät,
Jag såge bättre ripans gång
Och orren hölle trä't.

Om luften ville blifva sval,
Och löfven falla se'n,
Jag såg kanske i nästa dal
En flock af järpar re'n.

Dock snart skall ripans spår sig te
Och järpens skygd förgå;
Men den, som helst jag ville se,
Skall jag ej se ändå.

Jag blickar här, hon blickar der,
Men ack, vi mötas ej!
Jag kunde stå, der blicken år,
Och såge henne ej.

Emellan oss är sjö, är fjäll,
Är mo med furu på,
Emellan oss är dag och qväll
Och kanske natt också.

Kaikki linnut ovat maassa,
ja lehdet peittävät ne suojaansa;
laukaustakaan en ole ampunut,
ja ilta on jo taas tulollansa.

Jos talvi lopultakin tulisi
kinostensa kanssa,
näkisin paremmin missä metsäkana liikkuu,
ja teeri pysyisi puussa.

Jos ilma viilenisi
ja lehdet putoaisivat,
voisin ehkä seuraavassa laaksossa
jo nähdä pyyparven.

Kyllähän metsäkanan jäljet pian näkyvät,
ja teeren suoja katoaa.
Mutta sitä, jonka mieluiten tahtoisin nähdä,
en kuitenkaan saa tavata.

Minä katson tänne - hän katsoo tuonne;
mutta, voi, me emme kohtaa!
Vaikka voisin mennä niin kauas kuin katseeni kantaa,
en kuitenkaan näkisi häntä.

Meidän välillämme on järviä ja tuntureita,
on honkaisia kankaita,
