Mutter, ach, wie bist Du mild!
Wenn 's einst dunkelt auf den Gipfeln
Und der kühle Abend sacht
Niederrauschet in den Wipfeln:
O Maria, heil'ge Nacht!
Laß' mich nimmer wie die Andern,
Decke zu der letzten Ruh
Mütterlich den müden Wandrer
Mit dem Sternenmantel zu.

Turns aside the thunderstorms,
And where the realm rises weeping
From out of the grey waves,
You bless it from the rainbow --
Mother, ah, how gentle you are!
When someday it shall grow dark upon the heights
And the cool evening gently
Soughs downward in the treetops:
Oh Mary, holy night!
Do not desert me as the others do,
For the last rest, like a mother
Cover the weary wanderer
With your starry mantle.
