Einmal nach einer lustigen Nacht
War ich am Morgen seltsam aufgewacht:
Durst, Wasserscheu, ungleich Geblüt;
Dabei gerührt und weichlich im Gemüt,
Beinah poetisch, ja, ich bat die Muse um ein Lied.
Sie, mit verstelltem Pathos, spottet' mein,
Gab mir den schnöden Bafel ein:
"Es schlägt eine Nachtigall
Am Wasserfall;
Und ein Vogel ebenfalls,
Der schreibt sich Wendehals,
Johann Jakob Wendehals;
Der tut tanzen
Bei den Pflanzen
Ob bemeldten Wasserfalls --"
So ging es fort; mir wurde immer bänger.
Jetzt sprang ich auf: zum Wein! Der war denn auch mein Retter.

Un jour après une nuit joyeuse, Je m'éveillais le matin curieusement : Soif, peur de l'eau, pouls irrégulier, La tête troublée et sentimentale, Presque poétique, oui, j'implorais la muse pour un chant. Elle, avec une emphase feinte, se moqua de moi, Elle me donna ce rebut méprisable : « Un rossignol chante Près de la cascade ; Et un autre oiseau également, Qui signe de son nom Wendehals, Johann Jakob Wendehals ; Il danse Près des plantes Au dessus de la cascade susdite. » Et ainsi de suite ; Je devins de plus en plus anxieux. Alors je sursautais : du vin ! Ce fut vite mon sauveur. Marquez-le, chanteurs larmoyants, En cas de mal aux cheveux, n'appelez pas les dieux !
