Tote Seelen rufen dich von fern.
Eine aber war dir wert vor allen;
o, nun möchtest du vor Schmerz ihr folgen,
ihr und ihrem unsichtbaren Herrn.
Und du kannst nicht fassen,
daß du weiterlebst,
daß du deinen Arm zur Abwehr
hoch ins Dunkel hebst;
und auf einmal schweigt es,
und mit frommen Händen
legst du deinen Schmerz auf einen Stern.
