Grad Herz, brich nicht,
lieb mich und sags nicht,
liebt du mich,
wie ich dich
bleibt die liebe beständiglich.

Schöne Rose, fall nicht ab,
bis ich komm und brech dich ab:
Wenn mich schon die Dornen stechen,
will ich doch die Ros' abbrechen.

Wer die Rose will abbrechen,
muß nicht achten der Dornen stechen;
Rosendornen stechen sehr,
falsche Liebe noch viel mehr.

2. Die Sterne leuchten am Himmel   [sung text not yet checked]

Die Sterne leuchten am Himmel,
Es blinken die Wellen im See;
Es lockt und es grüßt aus der Tiefe,
Es grüßt und es winkt aus der Höh'.

Und leise flüstern die Lüfte,
Da schauert in Wonne der See;
Rings heilige, selige Liebe,
Nur mir in dem Herzen das Weh'.

Die Sterne sie wandeln am Himmel,
Die Wellen sie ziehn durch den See;
Was kümmert es sie, ob auf Erden
Ein Herz in Liebe vergeh'!

Holder klingt der Vogelsang,
Wann die Engelreine, 
Die mein [Jünglingsherz]1 bezwang,
Wandelt durch die Haine.

Röther [blühen]2 Thal und Au,
Grüner wird der Wasen,
[Wo die Finger meiner Frau
Maienblumen]3 lasen.

Ohne sie ist alles todt,
Welk sind Blüt' und Kräuter;
Und kein Frühlingsabendroth
Dünkt mir schön und heiter.

Traute, minnigliche Frau,
Wollest nimmer fliehen;
Daß mein Herz, gleich dieser Au,
Mög' in Wonne blühen!

Note: This is the version as published by Voß. The initial version of this poem, according to Hölty's manuscript, has one more stanza and is quite different (see below).

So hoch und tief hätt' ich dein Herz,
Kostbares Kind, geholt.
