In den Buchen Dohlen flattern

Ihre gelben Haare flattern
Und im Hofe schrein die Ratten.

Und umschmeichelt von Verfalle
Senkt sie die entzundenen Lider.
Dürres Gras neigt im Verfalle
Sich zu ihren Füßen nieder.

Presso alla fonte, quando l'aria imbruna
Spesso, come stordita, ella si accosta
attinge l'acqua, quando l'aria imbruna
riempie e solleva secchi senza sosta.

Fra i faggi neri uccelli svolazzanti,
simile a un'ombra il suo corpo s'è fatto,
sul capo gialli capelli svolazzanti,
e nel cortile s'ode il verso d'un ratto.

E, lusingata dal disfacimento,
Le palpebre infiammate lei socchiude.
L'erba ai suoi piedi, in disfacimento,
Piega morendo le sue foglie nude.

Stille schafft sie in der Kammer
Und der Hof liegt längst verödet.
Im Hollunder vor der Kammer
Kläglich eine Amsel flötet.

Silbern schaut ihr Bild im Spiegel
Fremd sie an im Zwielichtscheine
Und verdämmert fahl im Spiegel
Und ihr graut vor seiner Reine.

Traumhaft singt ein Knecht im Dunkel
Und sie starrt von Schmerz geschüttelt.
Röte träufelt durch das Dunkel.
Jäh am Tor der Südwind rüttelt.

Sfaccenda silenziosa nella stanza
Il cortile è da tempo deserto
Nel sambuco di fronte alla stanza
S'ode d'un merlo il lamentoso verso
 
Nella penombra la sua immagine allo specchio
Argentea e straniera le appare,
Poi svanisce e si oscura allo specchio
E con la sua purezza le fa orrore.
 
Come in un sogno canta un servo nell'ombra
Lei fissa il vuoto e trema di tormento.
Si spande il rosso, goccia a goccia, per l'ombra
Soffia dal Sud e batte alla porta il vento.

Gaukelt sie in Fieberträumen.
Mürrisch greint der Wind im Anger
Und der Mond lauscht aus den Bäumen.

Balde rings die Sterne bleichen
Und ermattet von Beschwerde
Wächsern ihre Wangen bleichen.
Fäulnis wittert aus der Erde.

Traurig rauscht das Rohr im Tümpel
Und sie friert in sich gekauert.
Fern ein Hahn kräht. Übern Tümpel
Hart und grau der Morgen schauert.

Di notte vaga sopra un deserto campo
Sorvolandolo tutto in un febbrile sogno.
S'ode il lamento del vento per il campo
E la luna, fra gli alberi, è in ascolto.
 
Intorno impallidisce il firmamento
Ed anche a lei tutto il viso scolora,
Dal grave peso della vita affranto.
Ed il terreno di putredine odora.
 
La canna fruscia triste nello stagno
Lei gela: il capo su se stessa chino.
Canta lontano un gallo. Sullo stagno,
Duro e grigio rabbrividisce il mattino.

In der Schmiede dröhnt der Hammer
Und sie huscht am Tor vorüber.
Glührot schwingt der Knecht den Hammer
Und sie schaut wie tot hinüber.

Wie im Traum trifft sie ein Lachen;
Und sie taumelt in die Schmiede,
Scheu geduckt vor seinem Lachen,
Wie der Hammer hart und rüde.

Hell versprühn im Raum die Funken
Und mit hilfloser Geberde
Hascht sie nach den wilden Funken
Und sie stürzt betäubt zur Erde.

Nella fucina batte squillante il martello
Lei sguscia rapida davanti alla porta.
Incandescente leva il servo il martello
E lei lo osserva come fosse morta.
 
Come in sogno lei sente una risata
E dentro la fucina lei barcolla,
Timida e rapita per quella risata
Pesante e dura come lui che martella.
 
Sprizzano nell'aria luminose scintille
E lei con un gesto impotente
Vorrebbe acchiappare le scintille,
Ma, tramortita, crolla sul pavimento.

Wacht sie auf voll süßem Bangen
Und sie sieht ihr schmutzig Bette
Ganz von goldnem Licht verhangen,

Die Reseden dort am Fenster
Und den bläulich hellen Himmel.
Manchmal trägt der Wind ans Fenster
Einer Glocke zag Gebimmel.

Schatten gleiten übers Kissen,
Langsam schlagt die Mittagsstunde
Und sie atmet schwer im Kissen
Und ihr Mund gleicht einer Wunde.

Languidamente distesa sopra il letto,
Presa da un'ansia lieve si è svegliata,
Attenta osserva il suo sudicio letto
Pervaso tutto d'una luce dorata,
 
E le resede là sulla finestra,
E il cielo d'un azzurro chiaro.
Ed ogni tanto il vento alla finestra
Porta d'una campana il tocco puro.
 
Un' ombra si è posata sul cuscino,
e lentamente mezzogiorno rintocca,
lei, con affanno, respira sul cuscino,
somiglia a una ferita la sua bocca.

Abends schweben blutige Linnen,
Wolken über stummen Wäldern,
Die gehüllt in schwarze Linnen.
Spatzen lärmen auf den Feldern.

Und sie liegt ganz weiß im Dunkel.
Unterm Dach verhaucht ein Girren.
Wie ein Aas in Busch und Dunkel
Fliegen ihren Mund umschwirren.

Traumhaft klingt im braunen Weiler
Nach ein Klang von Tanz und Geigen,
Schwebt ihr Antlitz durch den Weiler,
Weht ihr Haar in kahlen Zweigen.

A sera come insanguinati panni,
posano le nuvole sui boschi silenziosi,
che sembrano ammantati in neri panni.
Sui campi volano passeri chiassosi.
 
Lei giace tutta pallida nell'ombra.
E' più lieve il tubare sotto i tetti.
Come su una carogna, in un cespuglio all'ombra,
Attorno alla sua bocca volano gli insetti.
 
E, come in sogno, nel nero villaggio,
Ancora echeggia un suono di danza e di violini,
Erra il suo viso intorno al villaggio,
s'agita la sua chioma come nudi rami.
