Da steht auch ein Mensch und starrt in die Höhe,
Und ringt die Hände, vor Schmerzensgewalt;
Mir [graust]4 es, wenn ich sein Antlitz sehe, -
Der Mond zeigt mir meine eigne Gestalt.

Du [Doppeltgänger]5! du bleicher Geselle!
Was äffst du nach mein Liebesleid,
Das mich gequält auf dieser Stelle,
So manche Nacht, in alter Zeit?

Ήσυχη είναι η νύχτα, ησυχάζουν τα σοκάκια, 
Σ' αυτό το σπίτι ζούσε ο θησαυρός μου•
Έχει αφήσει εδώ και πολύ καιρό την πόλη, 
Αλλά το σπίτι ακόμα στέκεται στο ίδιο μέρος. 

Εκεί στέκεται κι ένας άνθρωπος και κοιτάζει ψηλά
Και σφίγγει τα χέρια από τον δυνατό πόνο•
Μου προκαλεί φρίκη όταν κοιτάζω το πρόσωπό του -
Το φεγγάρι μου δείχνει την ίδια μου την μορφή. 

Εσύ σωσία, εσύ ωχρέ σύντροφε!
Τι μιμείσαι σαν πίθηκος τον πόνο της αγάπης μου, 
Που με βασάνισε εδώ
Τόσες νύχτες, τον παλιό καιρό;

Ich wachte auf, und die Träne 
Floß noch von der Wange herab.

Mir träumt', du verließest mich.
Ich wachte auf, [und ich weinte]2
Noch lange bitterlich.

Ich hab' im [Traum]1 geweinet,
Mir träumte, du [wär'st mir noch]3 gut.

[Strömt meine Tränenflut]4.

2. Έκλαψα στο όνειρό μου

Έκλαψα στο όνειρό μου,
 σε ονειρεύτηκα νεκρή μέσα σε τάφο,
ξύπνησα και ένα δάκρυ
κυλούσε ακόμα στο μάγουλό μου.

Έκλαψα στο όνειρό μου,
ονειρεύτηκα πως με είχες εγκαταλείψει.
Ξύπνησα και έκλαψα
ακόμα περισσότερο πικρά.

Έκλαψα στο όνειρό μου,
ονειρεύτηκα πως είχες μείνει πιστή σε μένα.
Ξύπνησα, και χωρίς σταματημό
ανάβλυζε ο χείμαρρος των δακρύων μου.
