Mit schattigem Kastanienwalde
Senkt sich vom Apennin die Schlucht;
Oliven schmücken vorn die Halde,
Limonen reifen an der Bucht;
Ein dunkles Kloster ragt zur Seite
Des Wegs, verhüllt mit Blüthenschnee --
Vor uns in ungemess'ner Weite,
Ein glatter Spiegel, ruht die See.

Es stört die Welt mit keiner Kunde
Dies reizende Begrabensein;
Wir zählen weder Tag noch Stunde, 
Und wie im Traum nur fällt mir ein, 
Daß über'm Berg dort mit den Pinien 
Die Heimath liegt, an der ich hing, 
Eh' ich im Frieden dieser Vignen 
In deinem Arm verloren ging.

With its shadowy forest of chestnuts
The chasm descends from the Apennines;
Olive trees adorn the front of the acclivity,
Limes ripen at the bay;
A dark monastery looms alongside
The road, shrouded by blossom-snow --
In front of us in an unmeasurable expanse
The sea rests, a smooth mirror.

With nary a tiding does the world disturb
This delightful submergement;
We count neither days nor hours,
And, only as if in a dream, I recall
That over yonder mountain with the pine trees
Lies my homeland, of which I was fond,
Until in the peace of these grapevines
I lost myself in your arms.

    Sang ich dir das erste Lied --
    Blüten fielen von den Bäumen,
    Als das Leben schnell uns schied;
In dem Wind verwehn die Lieder,
Und wir sehen uns nicht wieder.

    Viele blaue Berge liegen
    Fernhinab bis an das Meer,
    Wie verirrte Vögel fliegen
    Meine Lieder drüber her --
In dem Wind verwehn die Lieder,
Und wir sehen uns nicht wieder.

    Wo die dunkeln Wälder lauschen,
    Zwischen Bergen liegt dein Haus --
    Wenn von dort die Lüfte rauschen,
    Klingt mein Singen leise aus.

    Kühle Lüfte rauschen leise,
    Und es schauert leis der Baum,

2. The songs dissipate in the wind

    At the first dreaming of the blossoms
    I sang you the first song --
    Blossoms fell from the trees
    When life quickly parted us;
The songs dissipate in the wind
And we shall never see each other again.

    Many blue mountains 
    Extend far down to the ocean,
    Like lost birds my songs
    Fly away over them --
The songs dissipate in the wind

    Where the dark woods harken,
    Between the mountains, lies your house --
    When the breezes sough from over there,
    My singing softly falls silent.
The songs dissipate in the wind
And we shall never see each other again.

    Cool breezes sough quietly,
    And the tree shudders softly,
    My lay sounds with quiet melancholy,
    As if it spoke of the last dream of love:

That which during the day was long forgotten,
Often returns to me in dreams:
Old sorrow, past happiness --
Whatever once my heart possessed.

And upon waking -- half in trepidation
I comfort myself:  that lies far in the past now!
And yet secretly I am seized by 
A yearning for olden times.
