English translations of Drei Lieder für 1 Singstimme mit Pianoforte, opus 6
by Julius Buths (1851 - 1920)

If I could travel with you up there, You dreamful moon, I might well be able to see over To where my beloved lives! Too happy is the nightingale That in the linden tree In front of her house fills Her dreams with sweet sound!

Have you heard the old fairy tale About the fisherman’s children? The ones who went out to sea Alone in a rickety boat? They picked water-lilies for each other, They sang each other many songs, They embraced and kissed each other In sweet exchange. They [lost]1 sight of the shore When the day departed, They never returned, Their names have been forgotten. -- And do you know: we are the children, [You the maiden, I the lad,]2 The sea is our love, It [shall likely]3 become our grave!

There was a little star in the sky, A star of good nature; It used to shine so meekly, So meekly and so mild. I knew its place In the sky where it stood; In the evening I stepped out of the door And was looking for it until I found it. And then I remained standing, Feeling a deep joy To look at the little star; And thanked God for it. The little star is gone; I try to find it here and there Where I have found it before, And find it now no more.
