Folles de joie sur le chemin lumineux,
Et l'une, emplie du plaisir de chanter,
Volète là, dans ma poitrine.

Es zieht mich so geheimnisvoll
An's öde Schilfgestade.
Ein matter Strahl vom bleichen Mond
Fällt auf die dunklen Pfade.

Der Nachtgeist flüstert mancherlei
Am schwarzen Schilf im Rohre,
Die Halme hören's, schütteln sich
Und klagen schwer im Chore.

Ich lausche. Weh wird mir zu Muth.
Die Melodie klingt trübe.
Sie ist ein dumpfer Grabgesang
Auf meine todte Liebe.
