Schweigsam treibt mein morscher Einbaum, Klar und ruhig wogt der See, Purpurwarme Abendschatten Färben der Gebirge Schnee. Eines Eilands Klosterhallen [Dämmern aus der Flut empor]1, Münsterglocken hör' ich schallen Und der Schwestern frommen Chor: Sempiterni fons amoris Consulatrix tristium Pia mater Salvatoris [Have]2, virgo, virginum. Summend, singend, rein verklingend, Süß ersterbend kommt der Ton, Luft und Welle führen schwingend Seinen letzten Hauch davon. Und die Rechte senkt das Ruder, Im Gebet erschweigt das Herz Und mir ist, als trügen Engel Eine Seele himmelwärts!

1. At Lake Traun

Silently my rotten dugout boat is drifting, The lake surges clearly and quietly, Crimson-warm evening shadows Are colouring the snow on the mountains. The halls of an island cloister [Rise dimly from the waters]1, I hear the priory bells ringing And the devout choir of the sisters: Everlasting fountain of love, Consoler of those who are sad, Loving Mother of the Saviour, Hail, Virgin of all virgins. Humming, singing, fading away purely, Sweetly dying away, the sound comes; Vibrating, the breeze and the wave carry Away the last breath of the sound. And my right hand lets the oar sink, My heart falls silent in prayer, And it seems to me as if angels Were carrying a soul heavenward!

Lockts dich nicht, hinabzulauschen Von dem Söller in den Grund, Wo die vielen Bäche gehen Wunderbar im Mondenschein Wo die stillen Schlösser sehen In den Fluß vom hohen Stein? Kennst du noch die irren Lieder Aus der alten, schönen Zeit? Sie erwachen alle wieder Nachts in Waldeseinsamkeit, Wenn die Bäume träumend lauschen Und der Flieder duftet schwül Und im Fluß die Nixen rauschen - Komm herab, hier ist's so kühl.

2. Can't you hear the forest rustle

Can't you hear the forest rustle outside through the quiet round? Aren't you tempted to listen down from the balcony to the ground where the many brooks flow wondrously in moonlight - where the silent castles look into the river from the high rock? Do you remember the mad songs from former, beautiful times? They all awake again at night, in the loneliness of the forest, when the dreaming trees are listening and the lilac has a sultry scent and in the river the mermaids murmur: come down, here it is so cool.
