Dieser alten Terrasse,
Du, einer luftgebor'nen Muse
Geheimnisvolles Saitenspiel,
Fang' an,
Fange wieder an 
Deine melodische Klage!
Ihr kommet, Winde, fern herüber,
Ach! von des Knaben,
Der mir so lieb war,
Frischgrünendem Hügel.
Und Frühlingsblüten unterweges streifend,
Übersättigt mit Wohlgerüchen,
Wie süß, wie süß bedrängt ihr dies Herz!
Und säuselt her in die Saiten,
Angezogen von wohllautender Wehmut,
Wachsend im Zug meiner Sehnsucht,
Und hinsterbend wieder.
Aber auf einmal,
Wie der Wind heftiger herstößt,
Ein holder Schrei der Harfe
Wiederholt mir zu süßem Erschrecken

¡Apoyada contra la pared de hiedra
de esta antigua terraza,
oh, lira misteriosa
de una musa engendrada del aire,
retoma,
retoma de nuevo 
tu melodioso lamento!
Llegáis hasta aquí, vientos, de muy lejos,
ay, desde la verde y fresca colina
del muchacho
que tan querido me era.
Y acariciando a vuestro paso las flores primaverales,
rebosantes de fragancia,
¡cuán, cuán dulcemente oprimís este corazón!
Y susurráis en las cuerdas,
movidos de armoniosa nostalgia,
acrecentándoos por efecto de mi anhelo
para morir luego.
¡Mas de pronto,
al soplar el viento con renovado ímpetu,
un dulce grito del arpa
se hace eco, para mi dulce sobresalto,
de la súbita agitación de mi alma,
y entonces la rosa, sacudida en su plenitud,
esparce todos sus pétalos a mis pies!
