Wenn sich zwei Herzen scheiden, Die sich dereinst geliebt, Das ist ein großes Leiden, Wie's [größ'res nimmer]1 gibt. Es klingt das Wort so traurig gar: Fahr' wohl, fahr' wohl auf immerdar! Wenn sich zwei Herzen scheiden, Die sich dereinst geliebt. [Da]2 ich zuerst empfunden, Daß Liebe brechen mag: Mir war's, als sei verschwunden Die Sonn' am hellen Tag. [Mir klang's im Ohre]3 wunderbar: Fahr' wohl, fahr' wohl auf immerdar! [Da]4 ich zuerst empfunden, Daß Liebe brechen mag. Mein Frühling ging zur Rüste, Ich weiß es wohl, warum; Die [Lippe, die mich]5 küßte, [Ist worden kühl]6 und stumm. Das eine Wort nur sprach sie klar: Fahr' wohl, fahr' wohl auf immerdar! Quan dos cors se separen, els que un cert dia s’estimaren. Quan primerament sentí que l’amor pot lacerar: per a mi, fou com si, en ple dia, el sol s’hagués eclipsat. Prodigiosament sona a les meves orelles: adéu, adéu, per sempre més! Quan primerament sentí que l’amor pot lacerar. La meva primavera se’n anà a jóc, jo sé ben bé perquè; els llavis que em besaren, s’han tornat freds i muts. Només una paraula digué ella clarament: adéu, adéu, per sempre més! Una vegada vaig veure la primavera florint a la vall més formosa; vaig veure la llum de l’amor en el rostre més bell. I ara, quan camino tot sol pel bosc a la primavera, a cada matoll se m’apareix també el seu rostre. I si el veig en un lloc on fa temps que la primavera ha marxat, brosta de nou i ressona al voltant de la seva dolça imatge.
