Below the number at the top of the text are the following words: "(Dieses ist ein wirkliches Volkslied, welches ich am Rheine gehört.)" which can be translated "This is a real folksong that I heard on the Rhein". Discese la brina di notte, in primavera, discese sui delicati fiorellini azzurri: ed essi appassirono e seccarono. Un giovane si era innamorato di una fanciulla; fuggirono in segreto dalle loro case, all'insaputa dei loro genitori. Andarono errando di qua e di là, non hanno avuto fortuna, né una buona stella, sono andati in rovina e sono morti.
