Mach auf, mach auf, doch leise mein Kind,
Um keinen vom Schlummer zu wecken.
Kaum murmelt der Bach, kaum zittert im Wind
Ein Blatt an den Büschen und Hecken.
Drum leise, mein Mädchen, daß nichts sich regt,
Nur leise die Hand auf die Klinke gelegt.

Mit Tritten, wie Tritte der Elfen so sacht,
Um über die Blumen zu hüpfen,
Flieg leicht hinaus in die Mondscheinnacht,
Zu mir in den Garten zu schlüpfen.
Rings schlummern die Blüten am rieselnden Bach 
Und duften im Schlaf, nur die Liebe ist wach.

Sitz nieder, hier dämmert's geheimnisvoll
Unter den Lindenbäumen,
Die Nachtigall uns zu Häupten soll
Von unseren Küssen träumen,
Und die Rose, wenn sie am Morgen erwacht,

2. Serenata

Apri, apri, ma piano, bimba mia,
per non svegliare nessuno,
mormora appena il ruscello, trema appena nel vento
una foglia fra cespugli e siepi.
Allora piano, bimba mia, che nulla si muova,
metti piano la mano sulla maniglia.

Con passi, come i passi delicati degli elfi
che camminano sui fiori,
vola leggera fuori nel chiaro di luna,
e vieni furtiva da me nel giardino.
Intorno dormono i fiori sul ruscello che scorre
e profumano nel sonno, solo l'amore è sveglio.

Siediti, qui la luce notturna
è piena di mistero,
sotto i tigli, l'usignolo sulle nostre teste
sognerà dei nostri baci,
e la rosa, quando si desterà al mattino,
sarà tutta ardente del brivido di voluttà della notte.

Und dem Mondstrahl, der auf den Kelchen sich wiegt,
Die Violen der Nacht sich erschließen?
 
O thörichtes Fragen! Wem Wissen frommt,
Nicht kann ihm die Antwort fehlen;
Drum warte, mein Kind, bis die Liebe kommt,
Die wird dir Alles erzählen!

confida in un sussurro alle campanule?
Perché, di ramo in ramo, 
chiamano gli uccelli con il loro cinguettio?

Perché gemme verso altre gemme si piegano,
e onde scorrono insieme con altre onde,
e al raggio della luna, quando si culla sui loro calici,
si schiudono le viole notturne?

Che insensata domanda! A che serve saperlo,
se la risposta non potrà mancare;
perciò aspetta, bambina, fin quando arriverà l'amore,
che ti spiegherà ogni cosa.

è, per me, la luce del giorno;
sorgessero pure nuovi soli,
non riuscirei a vederli.

Il mio sguardo va errando

Una fanciulla, dalle pallide guance,
mi fa cenno da là:
"Io sono andata avanti,
perché indugi?"

Unter tiefer Eisesdecke
Träumt die junge Knospe schon,

Mit der Lieder holdem Ton.

Nur empor den Blick gewendet,
Und durch düst'res Wolkengrau
Bricht zuletzt, daß es dich blendet,
Glorreich noch des Himmels Blau.

Aber auch die trüben Stunden
Und die Tränen, die du weinst,
Glaub', wie Freuden, die entschwunden,
Süßer scheinen sie dir einst.

Und mit Wehmut, halb nur heiter,

5. Adesso, coraggio!

Abbandona ogni trepidazione, sopporta coraggiosamente
le tue pene e i tuoi tormenti, 
anche se le ferite sanguinano ancora,
saranno alla fine risanate.

Sotto la spessa coltre di ghiaccio,
la giovane gemma sta già sognando
che primavera la risvegli
con il suono incantevole dei suoi canti.

Solleva ora lo sguardo in alto,
e tra il cupo grigiore delle nubi
irromperà infine, accecandoti,
l'azzurro glorioso del cielo.

Ma anche le ore tristi, 
e le lacrime, che stai versando,
credimi, come le gioie, che sono svanite,
un giorno ti appariranno più dolci.

E con una nostalgia, quasi rasserenata,
per sempre prenderai congedo
dal dolore, il compagno

Jubelt hinauf zu den Sternen und Sonnen,
Bebt zu vergeh'n in der wogenden Glut.

Schon auf dem Felsen durchs Grün der Platane
Seh' ich das säulengetragene Dach,
Und das flimmernde Licht am Altane

Sulla punta del remo che cala
scintilla tremulo un lucente bagliore,
sembra volare a ogni colpo di remo
come danzando da onda in onda.

Nel mio petto per l'estasi d'amore
trema e si illumina il mio cuore, come l'acqua, 
canta esultando alle stelle e agli astri, 
si perde fremendo nel fluttuante ardore.

Già dalle rocce, fra il verde dei platani,
scorgo il tetto sorretto da colonne, 
e la luce, che brilla sull'altana,
