Riesenwogen, die ihr brecht, aufbrüllend, an verlassnen und entlegnen Stränden, hüllt mich ein in Laken eurer Schäume - nehmt mich, Wogen, mit euch mit! Böen schwerer Stürme, die in Wäldern welke Blätter wehen von den Bäumen, reißt mich fort in euren blinden Wirbeln - nehmt mich, Stürme, mit euch mit! Blitzdurchzuckte Wolken im Gewitter, dessen Feuer ihre Ränder schmücken, zieht mich hin in eure finstern Nebel, nehmt mich, Blitze, mit euch mit! Habt Erbarmen, nehmt mich mit, wo Wahnsinn wird Verstand mir und Erinn'rung rauben. Gnade! Denn ich habe Angst, ich bleibe hier mit meinem Schmerz allein!

Dein Augenstern ist blau, und wenn du lachst, kommt mir bei seinem Strahlen, sanft und klar, das schimmernd’ Licht des Morgens in den Sinn, welches im Meer sich spiegelt. Dein Augenstern ist blau, und wenn du weinst, erscheinen mir die Tränen, still und klar in ihm, wie Tropfen morgendlichen Taus, welche auf Veilchen perlen. Dein Augenstern ist blau, und wenn ganz tief in ihm dein Sinnen wie ein Lichtpunkt strahlt, so scheint es mir wie ein verlorner Stern am abendlichen Himmel!

The word "á" (in lines 3, 6, and 7) has been changed to "a" in accordance with modern spelling. "río" is misspelled as "rio" in the first publication.
Es küssen die leise aufseufzenden Lüfte die leichten Wellen, dass sie spielend sich kräuseln; und die Abendsonn’ küsst die Wolke im Westen, bemalt sie in purpurnen, goldenen Tönen. Die feurigen Strahlen umzingeln die Stämme wie Flammen, die suchen, die andern zu küssen; die Weide, gebeugt unter eigener Schwere, küsst gar den Fluss, der diesen erwidert.
