Ach weh mir unglückhaftem Mann, daß ich Geld und Gut nicht habe, Sonst spannt' ich gleich vier Schimmel an und führ' zu dir im Trabe. Ich putzte sie mit Schellen aus, daß du mich [hörtest]1 von weitem, Ich steckt' [ein]2 großen Rosenstrauß an meine linke Seiten. Und käm' ich an dein kleines Haus, thät' ich mit der Peitsche schlagen: Da gucktest du zum Fenster 'naus: "Was willst du?" thätst du fragen. "Was soll der großen Rosenstrauß, die Schimmel an dem Wagen?["] "Dich will ich," rief' ich, "komm heraus!" Da thätst du nimmer fragen. "Nun, Vater, Mutter, seht sie an und küßt sie rasch zum Scheiden, Weil ich nicht lange warten kann, meine Schimmel [wollen's]3 nicht leiden."

Ach, wee mij ongelukk’ge man, dat ik heb noch goed noch have. Vier schimmels tuigd’ ik anders aan, en naar jou toe liet ik hen draven. Met bellen sierd’ ik ieder ros, [dat je mij van]1 ver hoort rijden; Ik stak een grote rozenbos hier aan mijn linker zijde. En als ik bij jouw huis aankwam, dan liet ik de zweep luid knallen, Dan zou jij kijken uit het raam: wat wil je? hoorden allen. Wat moet die grote rozensier, die schimmels voor de wagen? Jou wil ik! riep ik, Kom maar hier! Je zou ’t dan nooit mee vragen. Nu, vader, moeder, kijk haar aan en kus haar vlug voor ’t scheiden, Daar ik niet heel lang wachten kan, want mijn schimmels willen rijden.

Die Frauen sind oft fromm und still, wo wir ungebärdig toben, Und [wann sich eine Stärken will, dann blickt sie stumm nach oben. Ihr' Kraft und Stärke ist gering, ein Lüftchen kann sie knicken, Doch ist's ein eignes, starkes Ding, wenn sie gen Himmel blicken. Oft hab' ich selbst mit aufgesehn, sah die Mutter so nach oben: Ich sah nur graue Wolken gehn und blaue Luft da droben: Sie aber, wenn sie niedersah, war voller Kraft und Hoffen: -- -- Mir ist, die Frauen hie und da sehn noch den Himmel offen.

De vrouwen zijn vaak braaf en stil, waar wij woest slechts rust ontroven, En als er één meer sterkte wil, dan kijkt zij stil naar boven. Haar kracht en sterkte zijn gering, eén zuchtje doet haar wijken. Toch is ’t een sterk, bijzonder ding, dat naar de hemel kijken. Vaak heb ik zelf verbaasd gestaan: Keek mijn moeder zo naar boven, Ik zag slechts grauwe wolken gaan en blauwe lucht daar boven. Sloeg zij dan weer haar ogen neer, was zij vol kracht en hopen. Mij dunkt, de vrouwen zien soms meer nog wel de hemel open.
