Els diumenges de matinada que bonic és passejar a la vora del Rin, quan tot a l'entorn sonen les campanes del matí! Una barqueta avança per l'aigua blava, a dintre s'hi canta i es gauba; barqueta, digues, oi que dóna gust viatjar amb tota aquesta alegrança? Del vilatge ressona un orgue tocant una cançó pietosa, allà surt la processó devotament de la capella. I sever, amb tota la seva grandesa, el castell esguarda cap baix i parla del vell bon temps quan fou construït damunt la roca. Tot això acabala l'esplèndid Rin a les seves ribes plenes de vinyes i, en la llum més brillant, emmiralla amb raó tota la pàtria. La pàtria devota i fidel en tota la seva glòria, amb joies i cants de tota mena per el bon Déu és contemplada.

Els vaig esguardar tot el temps fins que esdevingueres la meva promesa; i de nou vaig pensar que res podria ser més bonic que, a tota hora, poder besar la teva boca vermella. I de nou vaig pensar en la dona més bella que fins ara només havia vist en somnis; això em va empènyer a sortir fora en la nit lluminosa i hagué de travessar terrenys silenciosos: de sobte, la vall resplendí, esborronant, com si fos una cambrada de fantasmes. Allà, el riu i el vent mormolaren plegats en una dansant melodia plena de drings i xiuxiueigs, llavors, com un brufol s'acostà una corrua fugaç des del rocam i les valls, des de les ones i el matossar i, a la claror de la lluna, dins d'un cercle blanc, les sílfides dansaven en rotllana. I al mig del cercle, una dona fantasmagòrica, era la seva reina, vaig sentir que cantava; "Deixa't anar d'aquest feixuc cos terrenal, deixa't anar dels necis afers mundans! Només en la claror de la lluna es troba la vida! Només flotant en somnis, l'existència eterna! Jo sóc la que sovint t'aparegué en somnis, jo sóc la que sovint ponderes com la teva estimada, sóc jo, la reina de les sílfides! Tu volies veure'm i ho has pogut fer! Ara seràs meu, meu per sempre. Vine, vine al regne de les sílfides!" Ara atansant-se i ara voleiant al meu entorn, alenà el matí i jo estava guarit.
