Original language: Der arme Peter
1. Der Hans und die Grete tanzen herum [sung text not yet checked]
Der Hans und die Grete tanzen herum,
Und jauchzen vor lauter Freude.
Der Peter steht so still und [stumm]1,
Und ist so blaß wie Kreide.

Der Hans und die Grete sind Bräut'gam und Braut,
Und blitzen im Hochzeitgeschmeide.
Der arme Peter die Nägel kaut
Und geht im Werkeltagskleide.

Der Peter spricht leise vor sich her,
Und [schaut]2 betrübet auf Beide:
« Ach! wenn ich nicht gar zu vernünftig wär',
Ich [thät']3 mir was zu Leide.»

1. Gianni e Rita danzano in cerchio
Gianni e Rita danzano in cerchio,
e lanciano grida di gioa.
Pietro sta quieto in silenzio,
ed è bianco come il gesso.

Gianni e Rita sono sposi,
e sono splendidi nelle loro vesti nuziali.
Il povero Pietro si mangia le unghie
e porta l'abito di tutti i giorni.

Pietro parla piano fra sé,
e guarda turbato i due sposi:
Ah! Se non fossi troppo ragionevole,
mi farei davvero del male!

2. In meiner Brust da sitzt ein Weh [sung text not yet checked]
"In meiner Brust, da sitzt ein Weh,
Das will die Brust zersprengen;
Und wo ich steh' und wo ich geh',
Will's mich von hinnen drängen.

"Es treibt mich nach der Liebsten Näh',
Als könnt die Grete heilen;
Doch wenn ich der ins Auge seh',
Muß ich von hinnen eilen.

"Ich steig' hinauf des Berges Höh',
Dort ist man doch alleine;
Und wenn ich still dort oben steh',
Dann steh' ich still und weine."

2. Nel mio petto c'è una pena
Nel mio petto c'è una pena
che vuole spezzare il cuore;
e se sto fermo o se mi muovo,
mi spinge sempre via.

Mi spinge verso l'amata,
come se Rita potesse guarirmi;
ma quando la guardo negli occhi,
devo fuggire lontano.

E salgo sulla cima dei monti,
là si sta veramente soli;
e quando sto tranquillo lassù,
allora in silenzio, piango.

3. Der arme Peter wankt vorbei [sung text not yet checked]
Der arme Peter wankt vorbei,
Gar langsam, leichenblaß und scheu.
Es bleiben fast, wie sie ihn sehn,
Die Leute auf der Straße stehn.

Die Mädchen flüstern sich ins Ohr:
"Der stieg wohl aus dem Grab hervor?"
Ach nein, ihr lieben Jungfräulein,
Der steigt erst [ins]1 Grab hinein.

Er hat verloren seinen Schatz,
Drum ist das Grab der beste Platz,
Wo er am besten liegen mag
Und schlafen bis zum jüngsten Tag.

3. Il povero Pietro va avanti con passo incerto
Il povero Pietro va avanti con passo incerto,
lento, pallido come un morto e schivo.
Restano ferme le persone
che lo vedono per strada.

Le ragazze si sussurrano all'orecchio:
"Quello è uscito dalla tomba"
Ah, no, mie care fanciulle,
quello sta per entrare nella tomba.

Egli ha perduto il suo tesoro,
quindi è la tomba il luogo migiore
dove più volentieri vuole andare
e dormire fino alla fine del tempo.
