Hatem
 Dies zu deuten bin erbötig!
Hab ich dir nicht oft erzählt,
 Wie der Doge von Venedig
 Mit dem Meere sich vermählt?

 So von deinen Fingergliedern
Fiel der Ring dem Euphrat zu.
 Ach, zu tausend [Himmelsliedern]1,
 Süßer Traum, begeisterst du!

 Mich, der von des Indostanen
 Streifte bis Damaskus hin,
 Um mit neuen Karawanen
Bis ans rote Meer zu ziehn,

 Mich vermählst du deinem Fluße,
 Der Terrasse diesem Hain:
Hier soll bis zum letzten Kuße
 Dir mein Geist gewidmet sein.

Suleika:
Als ich auf dem Euphrat schiffte,
 Streifte sich der goldne Ring
 Finger ab, in Wasserklüfte,
Den ich jüngst von dir empfing.

 Also träumt ich. Morgenröte
Blitzt' ins Auge durch den Baum,
 Sag, Poete, sag, Prophete!
 Was bedeutet dieser Traum?

Hatem
Estic disposat a explicar-t’ho!
No t’he contat moltes vegades
com el dux de Venècia
es va casar amb el mar?

Així, del teu dit
l’anell d’or va caure a l’Eufrates.
Ai, mil cants celestials,
dolç somni, tu m’inspires!

A mi, que des de l’Hindustan
he errat fins a Damasc
per, amb noves caravanes,
anar fins al Mar Roig,

a mi, em fas casar amb el teu riu,
a la terrassa d’aquest boscatge:
aquí, fins la meva darrera besada,
el meu esperit t’estarà dedicat.

Suleika:
Quan navegava per l’Eufrates
l’anell d’or s’esquitllà
del meu dit i caigué a les aigües profundes,
l’anell que fa ben poc havia rebut de tu.

Aquest fou el meu somni. L’aurora
m’enlluernà a través dels arbres,
digues, poeta, digues, profeta!
Quin significat té aquest somni?
