Der König und die Königin,
Sie stehen auf dem Throne,
Da glüht der Thron wie Morgenrot,
Wie steigende Sonn die Krone.
Viel stolze Ritter stehn umher,
Die Schwerter in den Händen,
Sie können ihre Augen nicht
Vom lichten Throne wenden.
Ein alter, blinder Sänger steht,
An seiner Harf gelehnet,
Er fühlet, daß die Zeit erschien,
Die er so lang ersehnet.
Und plötzlich springt vom hohen Glanz
Der Augen finstre Hülle.
Er schaut hinauf und wird nicht satt
Der Herrlichkeit und Fülle.
Er greifet in sein Saitenspiel,
Das ist gar hell erklungen,
Er hat in Licht und Seligkeit
Sein Schwanenlied gesungen.

Le roi et la reine
Sont assis sur le trône,
Le trône brille comme les feux de l'aurore
Et leurs couronnes comme le soleil levant.
Maints fiers chevaliers les entourent,
L'épée à la main,
Ils ne peuvent détourner leurs yeux
Du trône resplendissant.
Un vieux barde aveugle se lève,
Penché sur sa harpe,
Il sent qu'arrive le moment
Qu'il a si longtemps désiré.
Et soudain le voile noir devant ses yeux
Se déchire et fait place à un vif éclat.
Il lève les yeux et ne peut se rassasier
De cette splendeur et de cette richesse.
Il frappe les cordes de son instrument,
Qui rendent un son clair,
Dans la lumière et la félicité,
Il a chanté son chant du cygne.
