Die strebten nach hohen Dingen, Die wollten, trotz Lust und Schmerz, Was Recht's in der Welt vollbringen, Und wem sie vorübergingen, Dem lachten Sinnen und Herz. -- Der Erste, der fand ein Liebchen, Die Schwieger kauft' Hof und Haus; Der wiegte gar bald ein Bübchen, Und sah aus heimlichen Stübchen Behaglich in's Feld hinaus. Dem Zweiten sangen und logen Die tausend Stimmen im Grund, Verlockend' Sirenen, und zogen Ihn in der buhlenden Wogen Farbig klingenden Schlund. Eens togen twee dapp're gezellen Voor de eerste keer van huis, Al juichend recht in de klare, In de springende, zingende baren Van 't volle voorjaar op reis. Zij streefden naar hoge dingen, Zij wilden, 'tzij zacht of hard, Iets goeds in de wereld volbrengen, En wie zij voorbij maar gingen, Werd blij van geest en van hart. De eerste, die vond een liefje; Zijn schoonma hielp hem met haar geld, Hij wiegde weldra een zoontje En keek uit een nederig woontje Genoeglijk in 't open veld. De tweede man werd bedrogen Door duizend stemmen in zee, Hem lokten sirenen, zij riepen Hem in het zuigende diepe, In de diepe stroom ging hij mee. En toen hij opdook van onder, Was hij vermoeid en al oud, Zijn scheepje, dat lag diep bedolven, Doodstil was 't wijd op de golven En over het water woei 't koud.
