Dem Zweiten sangen und logen
Die tausend Stimmen im Grund,
Verlockend' Sirenen, und zogen
Ihn in [der buhlenden Wogen
Farbig klingenden Schlund]2.

Und wie er auftaucht vom Schlunde
Da war er müde und alt,
Sein Schifflein das lag im Grunde,

Des Frühlings wohl über mir;
Und seh' ich so kecke Gesellen,

Deux robustes jeunes gens partirent
De la maison pour la première fois,
Se réjouissant dans les brillantes,
Retentissantes, chantantes vagues
Au milieu du printemps.

Ils aspiraient à des choses élevées,
Ils souhaitaient, en dépit du plaisir et de la douleur,
Réussir quelque chose de juste dans le monde,
Et quand ils passeraient
Les esprits et les cœurs souriraient.

Le premier trouva une douce,
Dont les parents lui achetèrent une ferme et une maison,
Bientôt il berça un petit bébé,
Et regarda d'une petite chambre intime
Confortablement le champ.

Le second était chanté et trompé
Par mille voix dans la terre,
Des sirènes séduisantes l'entraînait
Dans les vagues attirantes,
Dans les vagues de l'abîme plein de couleurs.

Et quand il émergea de l'abîme,
Il était épuisé et vieux,
Son petit bateau gisait sur la rive,
