Dos robusts nois joves marxaren de casa per primera vegada, ben alegres, vers les lluminoses, ressonants i cantaires ones de la plena primavera. Ells aspiraven a grans ideals, volien, malgrat joia i dolor, portar justícia al món, i a tothom que trobaven somreien de tot cor i esperit. El primer trobà una estimada, els sogres li compraren casa i granja; aviat bressolava un petit infant, i des de la cambra a casa seva, esguardava confortablement els camps. Al segon, cantaren i ensibornaren mil veus des de les fondàries, sirenes seductores que l’arrossegaren vers les ones afalagadores del remorós i bigarrat abisme. I quan ell emergí de l’abisme, era vell i extenuat, la seva barqueta restava al fons, tot era silenci al seu entorn i damunt de l’aigua bufava un vent fred. Les ones de la primavera canten i ressonen al meu damunt, i quan veig joves nois tan agosarats, s’omplen de llàgrimes els meus ulls. – Ai, Déu, guia’ns amb amor cap a Tu!
