Auf die Nacht in den Spinnstuben
Da singen die Mädchen,
Da lachen die Dorfbuben,
Wie flink geht das Rädchen!
 
Spinnt jedes am Brautschatz,
Daß der Liebste sich freut.
Nicht lange, so gibt es
Ein Hochzeitsgeläut.
 
Kein Mensch, der mir gut ist,
Will nach mir fragen.
Wie bang mir zu Muth ist,
Wem will ich's klagen?
 
Die Thränen rinnen
Mir übers Gesicht --
Wofür ich soll spinnen,
Ich weiß es nicht!

In de nacht bij het spinnen
Dan zingen de Kaatjes,
Dan lachen de kerels,
Hoe vlug gaan de raadjes!
 
Elk spint aan haar uitzet,
Voor haar vriend en haar huis.
Niet lang meer, dan hoor je
Wel bruiloftsgedruis!
 
Geen mens die mij leuk vindt
Zal naar mij vragen.
'k Ben bang als een weeskind,
Waar moet ik klagen?
 
Mijn tranen stromen,
Ik heb zo'n verdriet.
Waarvoor moet ik spinnen?
Ik weet het niet!
